Lafayette Habitat for Humanity - verticalLafayette Habitat for Humanity is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles. Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.

Once an applicant is selected into the Habitat for Humanity Homeownership Program, they become a Habitat Future Homeowner. At this point, the Future Homeowner begins working on their partnership requirements of the program, including completing “Sweat Equity” work and attending homeownership education classes. These requirements take Future Homeowners an average of 12 months to complete. Once requirements are complete, and the construction of the home is finished, Lafayette Habitat for Humanity sells the home to the Future Homeowner at below market value for no profit, financing the sale with an affordable mortgage loan. Currently Lafayette Habitat homes average about $85,000 in price. Habitat for Humanity has built over 600,000 homes globally since 1976.
